On a quiet beautiful sunny morning, I encountered a fellow sporting a striking ducktail doo. As I approached, he looked at me with a single bright red eye and introduced himself as Merv.

It was quite early as the golden hour was nearing its peak, I wondered why he was up so early swimming in a large lake alone. Merv declared the world has forgotten how important it is to be alone! He went on to explain when the parties and conversations are over, all we have is ourselves so we had better get used to this because it is the only constant in our lives. In that moment not only was I shocked to hear a Horned Grebe speak so passionately sharing his wisdom, it felt like I was conversing with an old friend, an old soul.

Merv looked into the water and informed apologetically he needed to go as his breakfast was starting to surface. He gave me one last look over his wing feathers and bid me adieu before swimming away.
